AO Original Pilot - Gold - Green Glass True Color

Original Pilot

The Original - If you look at the Original Pilot model, you will immediately recognise the focus of the engineers, because the specifications included a pure Form follows Function design with high demands on visual quality and robustness.

It was the need for equipment adapted to the jet age that was at the beginning of the development, because in the 50s aircraft design changed rapidly and so did personal equipment. American Optical developed the new model Flight Google 58, later Original Pilot HGU 4 / S, according to a US Air Force requirement profile. The model could easily be worn under the helmet with the bayonet temples and due to the new, small shape of the lenses there was enough space for the oxygen mask. With its timeless, functional design, this model has endured to this day and is still the standard design for many pilots.

The Moon Story

With the APOLLO 11 mission, the first sunglasses on the moon

The functional model not only met the US Air Force standards at the time, but also all the strict quality guidelines of NASA, and so the glasses accompanied all astronauts on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. When Neil Amstrong made history with the moon landing on 14 June 1969, the AO Original Pilot was safely stowed in the sleeve pocket of the A7L Space Suit. Commander Neil Amstrong's original glasses are now on display at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. The historic accessory did not remain hidden from Hollywood for long, and so an endless list of films and stars attests to the success story of these sunglasses.
